Scenario A
Scenario A rebuilds the gym/recreation-wellness center on its existing site. It locates Creative Arts on the softball field site along Lake Merced Boulevard, the nursing/child care/research building on the Lakeview Center site, the museum on the Tapia Triangle, and the conference center/hotel at 19th Avenue/Buckingham Way. Following are pluses and minuses.

Gymnasium /Recreation /Wellness Center on existing site:

Plus:
  • Gym remains at the heart of the campus, adjacent to existing athletic facilities and Cox Stadium

  • Close to existing parking for public events

  • Proximity to student center expands social space
Minus:
  • Requires an interim athletic/recreation facility to be built on the existing tennis courts, thus increasing costs and requiring some temporary restrictions on gym activities

  • Eliminates potential prime academic building site in the core
Creative Arts on softball site:

Plus:
  • Site relatively unencumbered (provided softball can be accommodated elsewhere) and large enough for expansion and single-level building configuration

  • Truck access from Font Boulevard or Lake Merced Boulevard

  • Landmark building on Lake Merced Boulevard edge that anchors westward expansion of academic core
Minus:
  • Site is somewhat removed from the center of the campus, Muni Metro transit, and not as easy to find from 19th Avenue or the Quad
Nursing/ Child Care/Research on the Lakeview Center site:

Plus:
  • Site available for early development

  • Good access for drop-off from Lake Merced Boulevard
Minus:
  • Site is remote from academic core

  • Eliminates prime site for landmark, semi-public use (although child care has a semi-public, community aspect)
Conference Center/Hotel on 19th Avenue/ Buckingham Way site:

Plus:
  • High-profile site with good transit and auto access

  • Close to Stonestown mall for amenities

  • Could take advantage of Stonestown’s off-peak parking surplus
Minus:
  • Removes existing housing that may need to be replaced before construction can occur
Museum on Tapia Triangle:

Plus:
  • Creates a cultural arts “district” with Creative Arts

  • Animates Holloway

  • Close to associated programs/collections in Humanities, Fine Arts, Library, etc.
Minus:
  • Remote from Muni Metro transit

  • Remote from science programs with collections
