Design Concepts

Scenario B
Scenario B locates the gym/recreation-wellness center on the softball field site, Creative Arts on 19th Avenue, the nursing/child care/research building on Tapia Triangle, the museum on the existing Creative Arts site, and the conference center/hotel on the Lakeview Center site. Following are pluses and minuses.

Gymnasium/Recreation/Wellness Center on softball site:

Plus:
  • Gymnasium can be a single-level facility with room to expand

  • Can be built earlier than anticipated in other scenarios

  • Good public access from Lake Merced Boulevard

  • Close to core housing and University Park South
Minus:
  • Site is removed from the center of campus and from transit on 19th Avenue

  • Impacts Creative Arts project and other academic projects that need surge space
Creative Arts on 19th Avenue/ Buckingham Way site:

Plus:
  • High-profile site, close to transit and Stonestown Mall

  • Can accommodate truck deliveries from Buckingham Way
Minus:
  • Removes existing housing that may need to be rebuilt before Creative Arts building can be started, delaying Creative Arts project

  • Delays the construction of new academic facilities requiring the use of the existing Creative Arts building/site as surge space
Nursing/Research/Child Care on Tapia Triangle site:

Plus:
  • Site close to Gymnasium/Recreation-Wellness Center and center of campus

  • Easy drop-off from Font Boulevard
Minus:
  • Removes existing housing that may need to be replaced before construction can take place, delaying nursing project
Conference/Hotel on Lakeview Site:

Plus:
  • Spectacular site overlooking lake and athletic fields

  • Visible site with respect to campus identity

  • Good access from Lake Merced Boulevard
Minus:
  • Site is remote from public transit on 19th Avenue
Museum on Creative Arts site:

Plus:
  • Animates Holloway

  • Close to associated programs/collections in Humanities, Fine Arts, Library, etc.
Minus:
  • Not a highly visible site with regard to campus identity
