Campus Building Evaluation
As an urban campus with no vacant land, SFSU must look to existing buildings as redevelopment sites for new construction. A detailed
review was conducted of campus buildings—with the exception of newly renovated or constructed facilities or those slated for
renovation—focusing on the condition of structural, mechanical and electrical systems. Each building was scored on a scale of 1 to 4,
with 4 indicating the worst condition. Buildings also were evaluated according to three other criteria—FAR (floor area ratio),
which is a measure of how efficiently a building uses its site; the building’s contribution to the character and quality of the campus environment;
and its suitability to the program and/or use that it houses. Based on its cumulative score, each building was ranked for its redevelopment potential
in the near to long term. Buildings with the highest cumulative scores are candidates for replacement in the short term and provide sites for new
construction in the early phases of the master plan.
