Connecting to Lake Merced

The design concept reconnects the campus to Lake Merced in multiple ways—physically, visually and hydrologically. A bridge and ample pedestrian underpass replace a segment of roadway across the valley, allowing pedestrians and bicyclists to move freely between the campus and lake. A seasonal creek, suggestive of the original stream that flowed through the valley, once again carries water into Lake Merced. Dramatic vistas from 19th Avenue and within the campus make the lake a continual point of reference.
