Framework and Land Use Concept
Elements from the two preliminary framework and land use concepts were combined into a single concept, organized
around major axes and vistas that connect the campus from north to south and east to west. These defining lines guide the location of new
buildings and major circulation routes and reinforce views across campus. Build-to lines define the limits of new building footprints, adding clarity
to the campus organization.
The preferred framework and land use concept call for westward expansion of the academic core, landmarks at key campus corners, the valley as
a continuous greenbelt, continued development on the Lakeview Center/Corporation Yard sites, and a permeable building edge along 19th Avenue.
Within this framework, three options for locating the gym/recreation-wellness center were explored—on the
Tapia Triangle/existing Creative Arts sites, north of Cox Stadium and on the existing tennis courts.
Two of the earlier scenarios—locating the new building on the existing site of the gym (Scenario A) or on the
softball field at Lake Merced and Font Boulevards (Scenario B)—were eliminated. Rebuilding on the existing gym
site poses too many logistical obstacles to ongoing program operations and fails to open up this prime site on the Quad for academic use; similarly,
planning for the new Creative Arts building on the softball field already is too far underway to make this site a viable option.
