Option A
Option A locates the gym/recreation-wellness center on the existing tennis courts. It locates Creative Arts on the softball field site along
Lake Merced Boulevard, the nursing/child care/research building on the Lakeview Center site, the museum/academic building south of
Holloway, and the conference center/hotel at 19th Avenue/Buckingham Way. Following are pluses and minuses.
Gymnasium /Recreation-Wellness Center on existing tennis courts:
Plus:
- Site relatively unencumbered and potentially available earlier (provided tennis courts can be accommodated elsewhere)
- Close to athletic fields
- Access from Lake Merced Boulevard for events
- Close to undergraduate housing
Minus:
- Locating a building in the valley is contrary to the master plan vision, with the effect of disrupting views, spatial continuity, access,
and natural drainage
- Building’s primary function as social hub and academic facility is somewhat removed from center of campus
- Remote from public transit access
