Refined Concepts
Three design concepts are presented here, each offering a long-term vision for the campus as well as short- to mid-term changes.
Each is guided by the same overarching principles.
The three options are a further refinement of preliminary concepts. They explore different configurations
of new academic facilities; student, faculty, and staff housing; and key semi-public uses that include a new Creative Arts complex,
nursing/child care/research building, gymnasium/recreation-wellness center, a hotel/conference center and museum/academic building
to house the University’s diverse collections.
The key variable is the location of the gymnasium/recreation-wellness center. It is the most challenging building to site, since it contains large
program elements—an arena, multi-court gym, swimming pool—that ideally need to be located at ground level.
Options B (gym/recreation-wellness center on Creative Arts and Tapia Triangle sites) and Option C (north of Cox Stadium) are further refinements
of the preliminary concepts, Scenarios C and D, respectively. Option A locates
the gym/recreation-wellness center on the existing tennis courts.
The drawings and diagrams shown here were presented at a campus open house held on May 15, 2006.
Elements from each of the options ultimately were combined in the preferred concept.
