Sustainable Concepts

Restoring the valley’s historic connection to Lake Merced is central to the sustainable concepts underlying the design approach. As a vital link in both the district and campus green networks, the valley offers the opportunity to create a living laboratory on campus—reestablishing native plant communities over time and restoring natural drainage patterns to the extent possible. The valley serves as the final destination in the campus stormwater management system that collects and filters runoff before it leaves the site. A seasonal creek just south of the gym/recreation-wellness center—reminiscent of the stream that once flowed through the valley—ultimately would carry water into Lake Merced.
