Preferred Urban Design Concept
The concept describes both a long-term, 20–25-year vision (build-out) and the short- to mid-term changes expected to occur over a period
of 10 years. Phases 1–12, shown in the accompanying diagrams, address projects identified in the University’s 5-year
Capital Improvement Plan and the space required to accommodate the anticipated addition of 5,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) students.
The urban design concept locates new academic facilities; student, faculty, and staff housing; and key semi-public uses. These include a new
Creative Arts complex, nursing/child care/research building, gymnasium/recreation-wellness center, a hotel/conference center and
museum/academic building to house the University’s diverse collections and associated teaching and research space.
The Creative Arts building—a near-term project already in planning—along with the nursing/child care/research building and
gym/recreation-wellness center are slated for construction within the next decade. The museum/academic building and conference center/hotel
are longer-term projects that depend on private funding, although the earlier availability of funds could move these projects forward sooner.
The design concept assumes renovation of the existing library, already in design.
Of all the semi-public uses, the gym/recreation-wellness center is the most challenging to site, since it contains large program elements—arena,
multi-court gym, and swimming pool—that ideally need to be located at ground level. The building would house athletic events and training,
academic space and much-needed recreation and social space for SFSU’s growing residential community.
The preferred concept combines positive attributes of the previous options studied, along with unique features
of its own. It locates the gym/recreation-wellness center on the Lakeview Center and Corporation Yard sites, Creative Arts on the softball field site along
Lake Merced Boulevard, the nursing/child care/research building on the SOTA site, the museum/academic building south of Holloway near
19th Avenue and the conference center/hotel at 19th Avenue/Buckingham Way.
Locating the gym/recreation-wellness center on the existing Lakeview Center and Corporation Yard sites, allows for the seamless phasing of
new construction, while preserving the campus vision. The specific benefits are:
- Gym/recreation-wellness center is close to:
- Campus athletic fields
- Larger district recreation/open space system
- University Park North and undergraduate housing
- Requires no replacement housing or re-financing in the near term
- Accommodates large program elements—arena, multi-court gym, pool—at ground level, without the need for stacking
- Allows for implementation of planned capital projects—replacement buildings for HHS, BSS, Science, etc.—without the need for surge space
and interim moves
- Frees valuable sites—SOTA, Tapia Triangle, and former Creative Arts and gym—for academic use, clustered around the Quad and expanding
westward along the new east-west promenade between 19th Avenue and the Creative Arts complex.
- Confirms the campus vision by maintaining the valley as a continuous
greenbelt between 19th Avenue and Lake Merced.
